Why Australian?

Sometimes people wonder why we need to create new resources, as there are so many beautiful textbooks and readers available from large international publishers. Well, as we mentioned on our Why Indie? page, these are fabulous resources – for international students!

Our migrant learners are studying very different curricula, but most of all, need desperately to learn about their new country and about Aussie culture and communication patterns. They probably don’t need to talk about catching the Tube in London or to read Great Expectations – at this point, anyway. They do need to read about people like themselves having success in learning and in life.

Australian resources can feature Aussie idiom, can teach learners about Australia and prepare them for Citizenship studies, can gently address cultural issues (our love of dogs, our use of Aged Care…) The characters in workbooks and stories are not business executives or hard-boiled detectives, but ordinary people (who look like them) facing the everyday challenges of life and using English language to overcome them!
